1. Identification: Spondylus clarksoni (Lamprell, 1992), South Muiron Island, Exmouth Gulf, Western Australia, on pocket of solidified debris at edge of coral reef in 28m depth, ex Clarkson, 1998, live taken specimen shell.
2. Description: From the Clarkson collection. A large and beautiful specimen showing the typical characteristics of the taxon to perfection, and that is a pink to magenta to the body and especially so near the umbo, spatulated spines which are distributed mainly along the four principal ridges to the left of the shell which gives an asymmetrical appearance and then of course the lower valve which was completely attached to the coral rock just as you know from other taxons like the Mediterranean gaederopus. An interesting species which is related to the above mentioned species and to the cousin further south known as tenellus, but also a true species for its own right and known only to occur in a very small and restricted area. A splendid piece and a species which is not collected for quite some time. Large and impressive, with a beautiful inside, genuine all natural condition of exceptional quality.
